Jack Kirby’s greatest helmets (interlude)
April 17th, 2008
Just had to show you a couple of Kirby creations that didn’t make the list on a the technicality that they don’t wear helmets, they just have weird heads. This chap needs no introduction…oh go on then,
As you can see, it’s more of a cradle than a helmet. A cradle for a big headed baby man.
I love this guy’s indignant head and I love the look to camera that the Thing’s giving us.

How do you mention MODOK and NOT show the even MORE AWESOME “head” of ARNIM ZOLA!
He has a “helmet” (a mini-cam) that IS his head, and his head (or FACE, anyway) is in his CHEST… on a MONITOR SCREEN!
That, my friends, is AWESOMENESS to the EXTREME!

More awesome than a head DESIGNED *ONLY* FOR KILLING
No, no, you are mistaken.

I was just thinking about Arnim Zola this morning. Yes he is truly, beautifully ridiculous.

He really is; I mention how – just wrong, he seems with metalllic reflection and under the pencil of Steve Epting he seems in my Cap #37 review.
Arnim Zola’s arms are higher up his head-body than MODOK’s.

Don’t get me wrong, I LOVE the visual of M.O.D.O.K., I really do.
But he DOES seem to come across as more of a wrinkly-faced “Humpty Dumpty” than anything else.
And as far as the “*ONLY* for Killing” aspect…?
Well, at the end of the day, he doesn’t really DO all that much killing.
He talks a hell of a lot though.
So if it was M.O.D.O.C.
(Mental Organism Designed Only for CHATTING, or Mental Organism Designed OCCASIONALLY for Killing, then yeah, accurate naming. Otherwise, not so much.)
I also don’t quite understand how he doesn’t induce instant belly-laughs from anyone who sees him.
I mean, that “sweating-to-the-oldies” exercise HEADBAND alone is worth a gaffaw or two.
I’d be like: “Damn, Jane Fonda REALLY let herself go!”
(yes, MODOK’s a dude, I know, but poking fun at RICHARD SIMMONS is too easy and sad.)
It HAS to be easy to beat him.
All you need is any kid who can do the “crouch down behind him while I push him onto his back” maneuver and you’re set to call it a “win” and go off to get some brews.
Hmmm… looking at his design again, I wonder if that “hover-toilet” that he’s wedged in is powered by METHANE gas.
Can you picture MODOK pulling up to the drive-in window of a TACO BELL ordering 200 Bean Burrito Supremes (with extra cheese)?
“MODOK REQUIRES FUEL!”
…uh…I just got myself banned from making future comments, haven’t I?

M.O.D.O.K isn’t funny.
His head is big, it is angry, it is designed Only For Killing. M.O.D.O.K is, by nature, unconcerned with your Taco Bells.
